Can an Arts or Commerce Student Become a Commercial Pilot in India?

 You chose Commerce or Arts in Class 12. Somewhere between then and now, you looked up at a plane cutting across a clear sky and thought — could that still be me?

The answer is yes. And it is more straightforward than most people think by right CPL exam preparation.

The DGCA Rule Every Arts and Commerce Student Needs to Know

Here is what the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) actually requires for a Commercial Pilot License in India:

  • Age: Minimum 18 years at CPL issue
  • Education: Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics, minimum 50% in both subjects
  • Medical: DGCA Class 1 Medical Certificate

Notice what is not on that list: your stream. DGCA does not ask whether you studied PCM, Commerce, or Humanities. It asks whether you have Physics and Mathematics at the 10+2 level — from any recognized board.

That single distinction changes everything.

How Arts and Commerce Students Can Meet the CPL Eligibility Requirement

The most widely used DGCA-accepted pathway is through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).

NIOS lets you appear for individual Class 12 subjects without re-enrolling in a full programme. Register for Physics and Mathematics separately, prepare at your pace, and appear via the On-Demand Examination (ODE) system — available year-round — or the scheduled April/October sessions.

Pass both subjects with a minimum 50% aggregate. Your NIOS mark sheet carries the same legal standing as a CBSE certificate for pilot licensing. Every DGCA-approved flight training organisation in India accepts it.

Cost: ₹8,000–₹15,000 including materials and exam fees.
Timeline: 6 to 12 months for most students.

Step-by-Step Roadmap: Commerce or Arts Student to Commercial Pilot

Step 1 — Clear Physics and Maths via NIOS

Register on the NIOS portal and select Physics and Mathematics at Senior Secondary level. You can begin studying aviation theory simultaneously — DGCA ground subjects do not require prior NIOS results to start.

Step 2 — Get Your DGCA Class 2 Medical

Visit a DGCA-approved Aviation Medical Examiner. Do this in parallel with NIOS preparation. Most healthy candidates clear it without issue.

Step 3 — Begin DGCA Ground School

Step 4 — Log 200 Flying Hours at a DGCA-Approved FTO

From this point, your Class 12 stream is completely irrelevant. Airlines evaluate your CPL, flying hours, and medical fitness — nothing else.

A Note on DGCA’s Proposed Reform

In April 2025, DGCA recommended removing the Physics and Mathematics requirement entirely for CPL eligibility — allowing any Class 12 graduate from any stream to apply directly. As of now, this is still under Ministry review and has not been notified.

Do not wait for it. The NIOS pathway is clear, affordable, and fully accepted today. Starting now puts you months ahead of anyone sitting on the sidelines.
